Chicken Fried Steak

Tenderised steak coated in crispy seasoned batter and smothered in creamy peppery gravy. A Southern classic.

Despite the name, this is steak cooked like fried chicken. The creamy white gravy is made in the same pan.

Serve with mash and green beans.

Method

  1. Beat the steaks thin. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and seasoning, keeping 3 tbsp aside for the gravy.
  2. Beat the eggs with 100ml milk. Dip the steaks in flour, then egg, then flour again.
  3. Fry in the hot oil for 3 minutes each side until golden. Keep warm.
  4. Pour off all but 3 tbsp fat. Stir in the reserved flour, then whisk in 400ml milk.
  5. Simmer for 3 minutes until thick, add the pepper and season. Pour over the steaks.
